- Birth - nap time is well understood, and required
- Pre-school - nap time is a necessity, and yet somehow begins to be resented by the child
- Grade school - nap time is usually a lost luxury as the school day begins to dis include it in the curriculum
- High school - we long for the return of nap time, but alas, are forced to fake wake fullness through masterful use of the "elbows-on-desk-I'm really "reading"-hope they don't see me drool" technique
- College - nap time again becomes a requirement, mainly due to all-night study groups.
- Adulthood - we long for the ritual of nap time to come back to us, and can only occasionally sneak one little 15-20 minute interlude of midday shut eye by escaping to our parked car in the company parking lot... and either resigning ourselves to the fact that passers-by will see us, or telling ourselves that we don't care if they do
- Pregnancy (first trimester) - nap time is forced upon you in the form of a narcoleptic-type coma which simply overwhelms you. you have no choice but to accept it.
- Pregnancy (second trimester) - nap time doesn't even cross your mind, you're so full of energy!
- Pregnancy (third trimester, and last month in particular) - If you wish to be of any use to anyone after 7pm in the evening, then you must begin inserting an afternoon nap into your daily routine. 2 hours is best... but 1 1/2 is the minimum. This is much different than the first trimester narcoleptic-type coma which just suddenly comes over you and you have no choice but to accommodate. This is more like a choice for self preservation... You can still choose not to take the nap, but in doing so, you resign yourself to be grumpy good-for-nothing-slob-of-a-person for the remainder of the day and probably most of the day after.
And so... I've been enjoying daily afternoon naps for the past week. Thank goodness I work at home and can sneak them in between meetings!
In other news...
Our second baby shower was on Saturday and it was so much fun! It was a Kentucky Derby party and I was thrilled that so many folks showed up donning fancy hats! Most of the guys even came dressed up a little! Carmen did a fabulous job decorating her home for us (and hand making all of the decorations!), and the food was fabulous (thanks for the derby pie Jeana)! We got some fabulous gifts, including a one-of-a-kind (and absolutely beautiful) baby outfit made by "Couture by Carmen"... I can't wait to try it out on her! Here are a few pics...
We have another prenatal appointment this Thursday, and I think we'll begin having them every week from here on out until the baby arrives. According to my sweet Mom, I don't have that "about to pop" look, so we've probably got quite a while to wait yet. And yet, time does fly by. She'll be here before we know it.
Johnny's Mom is coming into town this weekend to help us set up the nursery, and so things are finally all falling into place. The carpet for the basement is coming this Thursday (earlier than it was originally scheduled for) so we will be all set to move the office down there on Friday thus freeing up the nursery for actual baby stuff (which is currently in complete disarray and in boxes all over the house).
It'll be nice to get things in order... I think we'll both start feeling more settled about our house. Of course, as Johnny is fond of reminding me, "complete disarray" is business as usual around here thanks to the remodeling projects which always seem to be in some state of activity.
